What is art therapy?

(Art Therapist Bekah Mathiesen)

Art Therapy is a modality of talk therapy that engages the individual receiving therapy in the creative forms of personal, therapeutic, and goal oriented expression. Art therapy can utilize most types of art materials, and even the expressive written word and poetry.

This gentle and powerful form of therapy invites the individual into curiosity regarding their behaviors, coping mechanisms, relationships and feeling states. When drawing, collaging, painting, and enjoying art making without judgement, fear or the need to be perfect, many realizations can occur. This can help the client build upon their self-insights and emotional literacy. This can offer a way to grow awareness and address client symptoms.

Utilizing specific, personally tailored art directives and art-based interventions assists both the therapist and client. Engaging the body in creating art, visually seeing what is made and considering what is portrayed in their art often leads to deep realizations from the client and a sense of increased confidence.

Art is a non-verbal form of communication that can act as a bridge between action and awareness.

Art therapy is a modality for young and old alike and is not specific for those who consider themselves “artists.” All levels of physical ability, developmental ability and cognitive ability can engage in art therapy.

As humans, we are all creative and all we have to do is allow ourselves to access our creativity. Art making is an adaptable, useful tool for inner and outer self-exploration, within the therapeutic alliance. Art and art making empowers the client to step into resiliency and truly discover what they’re capable of.
